THE-PRACTICEDr. Calva-Cerqueira completed his training at the prestigious Johns Hopkins/University of Maryland Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery program. His main focus is on aesthetic/cosmetic and complex head-to-toe reconstruction. The Johns Hopkins Hospital has been ranked by US News and World Reports as the #1 hospital in the US for 23 years.

He obtained his Bachelor education at Georgetown University, where he graduated with honors. He then attended one of the top medical schools in the country, the esteemed Carver College of Medicine. After medical school he completed 7 years of training in General Surgery (Board Certified) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, one of the top residency programs in the US. During his General Surgery training, he did 2 years of molecular genetics, where he conducted award winning research on cancer biology, and was awarded two grants by the NIH (National Institutes of Health) to performed cutting edge molecular research in cancer genetics.

Dr. Calva-Cerqueira served as the first Administrative Chief Resident in the department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and he is the first recipient, within the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, to receive The Frank I. Coulson Jr. Award for Clinical and Academic Excellence at Johns Hopkins. This is the most prestigious award at Johns Hopkins, and a very selective process by his peers is used to select the individual.

He trained under leaders in the field of Aesthetic/Cosmetic, Craniomaxillofacial, and Hand Surgery, and has co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in some of the most well respected medical journals. His research has been presented on multiple national conferences throughout the United States. His innovative research interests, outstanding training credentials, ethics, and personalized care are his unique and distinguishing characteristics.

Dr. Calva-Cerqueira also trained at the Curtis National Hand Center, which is one of the most prestigious hand institutions in the world. The Curtis National Hand Center has one of the most coveted and competitive fellowships in hand surgery, training future leaders in the specialty of hand and upper extremity surgery. While at the Curtis National Hand Center, Dr. Calva-Cerqueira trained in a wide variety of hand problems, and traumatic injuries. From treating fingertip injuries, to amputations, tendon ruptures, finger fractures, distal radius fractures, forearm fractures, repetitive motion injuries, complications from arthritis, nerve injuries, and congenital anomalies.

Dr. Calva-Cerqueira joined world renown and pioneer Dr. Roger K. Khouri at The Miami Breast Center and has mastered his techniques with particular extensive experience in nipple areola preservation mastectomies (removal of the breast and maintaining the nipple/areola) with immediate reconstruction using autologous fat transfer. He is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.
